When I was nine, I stopped smiling.
A permanent tooth had grown above a milk tooth, pushing my lip outward. I was self-conscious about my dentition, so I learned to hide it, tight-lipped in every photo.
The dentist recommended an extraction and realignment. My dad said it would fix itself. But it didn’t.
A year later, I had the tooth removed and braces fitted. I wore them for ten years, and I still wear retainers.
