Our Origin Story

Stories are equipment for living

Kenneth Burke

As a five-year-old, I struggled to read and write. My mum noticed that I avoided doing my assignments, and when she found out why, she made me repeat Primary 1. She not only made me repeat but also taught me how to read and write. By the following school year, I’d become a voracious reader, and a decade later, I discovered my passion for writing.

Growing up, my mum told a lot of stories. She had a story for every situation. Whether she was teaching a lesson or scolding us, especially when she was scolding us, she always told stories, and that shaped how I viewed the world and processed information.

When I was 16, right before I graduated from secondary school, I started to write stories and poems. I studied Law as an undergraduate student, and those were some of the hardest moments of my life as I struggled to keep my grades up, but the only thing that made my heart sing was writing and I kept at it. After finishing university and Law school, I moved to the UK to study Creative Writing, got a job as a copy editor for an academic publisher, and a year later I lost my job.

The one thing that made my heart sing while I was in university was the one thing I fell back on after losing my job, and that’s how Kemi Writes was reborn. I say reborn because I founded it in 2018 as a writing agency.

Two friends visited me at my hostel and said I could do something more with my passion for writing. I’d been nursing the idea of a writing agency for a while, but I was struggling with my dwindling grades and couldn’t manage two things at a time. They encouraged me to start regardless, and I did.

I started writing for a blog and then started my blog. I moved on to editing for authors and publishers, writing speeches, and covering events. Before long, Kemi Writes became a team of nine.

In 2021, the team was disbanded when I moved to the UK for my postgraduate study and Kemi Writes stopped. In 2024, Kemi Writes was relaunched as a communications and editorial agency, and our purpose is to craft stories that shape perceptions and to help our clients tell the kind of stories that resonate with their audiences and make lasting impacts. That’s why we do what we do.

We value reliability, excellence, speed, and trust, and our clients come to us because they trust us enough to do what we say we will do, when we say we will do it, and how we say we will do it.
