Kill the Chicken

communication problems

My parents brought home a small local live chicken. It was meant to be eaten, but I wasn’t willing to kill it, so I left it alone.

On the first morning, it crowed loudly for hours. I was mildly irritated, but not enough to kill it. Then the next morning, it resumed its duty as the unwelcome alarm. It crowed and crowed and crowed, and I lay awake, unable to sleep.

That triggered the all-too-familiar headache. I felt the pain radiating from my left eye to the back of my head. I stared at my laptop, unable to type. It felt like there was a tight band around my head. I crept into my bed, pulled my black hair bonnet over my eyes and tried to sleep. I could feel my head splitting in half.

Then another morning, the chicken crowed again. At 3:42 a.m. I wanted to kill that chicken immediately. I stayed awake, dreading what the day would be like. I hadn’t been able to work in the past days because of the constant headaches. I knew I had to kill the chicken at some point, but I couldn’t even muster enough strength to do it. So I left it again.

Morning after morning, it crowed. Day after day, I lay awake, unable to sleep, and I suffered for it.

Until one Friday morning. I’d had enough. I was about to take a shower when I realised that if I didn’t kill the chicken that day, I’d extend my problem to another day.

So, I stepped out, went to the kitchen, picked a knife, sharpened it, and killed the chicken. I eliminated my problem.

Your communication problem is like that chicken, MM. It’s keeping you awake at night and giving you headaches during the day. It’s eroding trust in your leadership. It’s causing misalignment and low morale in your team.

That chicken is costing you productivity, credibility, and sleep. And every day you delay, it crows louder. Eliminate the problem before it festers. Kill the chicken.

I know what it’s like to live with a problem, and I don’t want you to live with yours. I’m good at eliminating communication problems before they fester, so let’s kill the chicken together.

If You've Ever Thought...

I don't have time for storytelling

You’re already telling stories in how you explain your goals, give feedback, or celebrate wins. We help you do it with intention and purpose. Taking a story audit is a good place to start.

I'm not a natural storyteller

You don’t have to be. Storytelling isn’t about performance, but about clarity and connection. You might want to design what you need so that you get tailored tools and frameworks.

Storytelling is fluff; my team wants the facts

When you wrap facts and data in a story, they become memorable, actionable, and emotionally resonant. Your team is more likely to remember a story better than a fact. Try it.

Storytelling won't work in my industry

The primary way people retain information is through stories. Whatever your industry, storytelling will help you simplify abstract or technical ideas and connect with your audience.

I've tried storytelling before; it didn't work

You may have used storytelling without the right structure, timing, or audience awareness. We’ll help you use the right stories at the right time for the right audience.

I don't have stories

Err… you do. You probably don’t know where to look. Stories are not in the big and dramatic experiences of life, but in the small daily moments. The Find and Craft Your Story; Build Your Story Bank is for you.
